NetPing Issued the Firmware Update DKSF 707.3.5 for a NetPing SMS Device

NetPing global Ltd.company announces the issue of an updated firmware version DKSF 707.3.5 for a NetPing SMS gateway. This firmware version contains error fixes, implementation of new features and a small update of a design of a device web interface.

So what have been changed in the latest version?

Firmware Version DKSF 707.3.5 from 11.10.2016:
  • Confusing phone numbers for outgoing SMS messages after overfilling of an outgoing queue when sending SMS through HTTP API interface is eliminated. Errors of sending SMS are displayed in the SMS log;

  • A possibility to request a result of sending SMS notifications when using HTTP API interface is added. Consequently, a response format of invoking /sendsms.cgi is complemented;

  • Correct receiving of SMS notifications with the code TP-OA Type = 0x81, coming from short phone numbers, for example, informational notifications from a bank, SMS-deliveries, etc.  is implemented;

  • Correct processing of snmpTrapOID elements, values of which exceed 32768 in trap rules → SMS on the page «TRAPS» of a device web interface in implemented. A limit of the size of OID elements is 31 bits;

  • Processing of incoming long (fragmented) SMS notifications longer than 70 characters is fixed. In a previous firmware version, incoming long SMS notifications might be displayed in a log file of a device as hieroglyphs;
  • Using space is allowed in short names of SNMP agents specified on the page «AGENTS» of a device web interface (however, using such names in a configuration is not recommended);
  • OID of a variable «npRelHumTrapDataSafeRangeLow» is corrected, which is contained in traps «npRelHumTrapAllChannels», «npRelHumTrapTempAllChannels» in references on the pages of a device web interface. In a previous firmware version, a variable «npRelHumTrapDataSafeRangeLow» returned a number of a channel of a humidity sensor instead of a bottom threshold of a normal humidity/temperature;
  • A substitution of a description of values of variables is fixed in the trap rules → SMS on the page «TRAPS» of a device web interface. Before, textual descriptions of variables might be cut after the fifth character;
  • Correct sending SMS notifications to default phone numbers (specified on the page «GSM SETUP») through HTTP API and SNMP is fixed. In a previous firmware version, random SMS messages were not set if in a text of a request destination numbers were not specified in the square brackets [];
  • SNMP OID variable «npGsmSendSmsWin1251» (.1.3.6.1.4.1.25728.3800.1.10.0) is added for sending SMS messages via SNMP protocol in Windows-1251 encoding, which eliminates a necessity to convert an SMS text into UTF-8 encoding in the scripts that are run in the Windows operation systems;

  • A counter operation that displayed the amount of available characters in SMS message on the page «SEND SMS» of a device web interface is corrected;
  • The page «GSM SETUP» of a web interface in English firmware version is aligned with the Russian page (firmware version DKSF 707.3.5.A-1);
  • A description of the variable «npRelHumSensorStatusH» is updated in the contents of the trap «npRelHumTrap» in a window for trap rules configuration → SMS on the page «TRAPS» of a device web interface

DKSF 70.6.3 DKSF 71.6.3 Firmware Version from 25.08.2016:

Innovations and bug fixes that are related to SMS notifications and periodic SMS reports, are represented only in DKSF 70.6.3 version for a UniPing server solution v3/SMS device, which is equipped with a built-in GSM modem.

  • A branch SNMP OID «npGsmSendSmsWin1251» is added for sending random SMS notifications in Cyrillic in Win1251 encoding by an SNMP protocol;
  • A support for sending «long» SMS notifications, SMS reports, and random SMS notifications is implemented. In this firmware, limits for the length of an SMS of 70 characters are removed. Now GSM7 encoding and fragmenting of SMS notifications are supported;
  • An issue of sending adjustable notifications from humidity sensors when connecting sensors to 1-Wire port of a device is eliminated;
  • An issue of receiving a USSD response when implementing SSE is eliminated. In a previous firmware version, a response to requesting a balance of a SIM card has been displayed as «{ussd_responce:"-"}»;
  • A page «SMS» of a web interface in the English firmware version is aligned with a Russian page (firmware version DKSF 70.6.1.A-1);
  • A possibility to control a power of a current loop (1-Wire smoke sensors) through an SNMP protocol (OID «npSmokePower» - a status is corrected from read-only to read-write) is added;
  • An incorrect displaying of values above 32°C from temperature sensors via an SNMP protocol when reading the OID «npThermoValuePrecise» is eliminated;
  • Monitoring of temperature readings from humidity sensors is corrected in the module «Thermo (Hygro) stat» at the page «LOGIC» of a device web interface. In a previous firmware version, the module «Thermo (Hygro) Stat» displayed a status «sensor failure» in this case;
  • An identification of MIB files is corrected to DKSF-70-6-X-X-1 and DKSF-71-6-X-X-1 to correspond to a version number of the firmware;
  • An issue of saving the settings of notifications from humidity sensors in a device web interface is eliminated;
  • An issue of incorrect displaying minus values of a normal temperature range on the page "HUMIDITY SENSORS" of a device web interface is eliminated;
  • A module of adjustable notifications is improved: a reset to default parameters is implemented in the module, incorrect displaying of a notification method in a dialog for setting a rule is eliminated, a correct information substitution from the MIB tree of a device into a text of configured notification is implemented, sending of SNMP TRAP to a repeating server is added.

How to Generate a Pulse on an IO Line When a Sensor of a Device Triggers

NetPing devices have built-in IO lines (input-output lines). They can be used both in the «input» mode, and the «output» mode or a «logic output» for controlling external devices. Examples of using IO lines in the mode «output»/«logic output» are as follows:

  • remote rebooting of servers, which is an imitation of pushing a «Reset» button;
  • remote controlling of an alarm, lighting, a ventilator;
  • controlling electric lock, and electric gate at a remote site;
  • controlling the elements of a «smart home»: watering plants, opening / closing blinds, water pump, boiler, electric heaters, etc.;
  • remote controlling of an energy device (diesel generator, gasoline generator)

A proper electric harmonization of IO lines is required while connecting external actuating devices.

IO lines do not have a galvanic isolation with a device! When using relays, which commute 220 V networks, there is a need to remember about electric safety! All works must be done by specialists, who have a corresponding qualification and a permit to work with a given voltage.

In this example, a configuration of generating a short-term pulse on an IO1 line when a specified temperature threshold on a sensor, connected to a NetPing device, is exceeded, will be examined.

How to Monitor Zabbix via SMS Using NetPing SMS

A difficult job of a network administrator is based on watching the status of a network equipment and servers. This task is complicated when there is no access to the Internet network at fingertips either a necessary equipment. The article describes how to solve this issue with a monitoring system Zabbix by using a phone with a possibility to send/receive SMS-messages and a NetPing SMS device.

Zabbix is a universal and flexible OpenSource solution for monitoring a network equipment (NMS) of a corporate scale. The system has a possibility to notify about events in different ways: E-mail, SMS, Jabber, user scripts. In the article, a method of using user scripts and a NetPing SMS device as an SMS gateway for sending SMS responses about a status of requested sensors in Zabbix monitoring system will be described. To receive SMS requests, a NetPing SMS device will be used as well. The device can transmit SMS requests in Zabbix in the form of SNMP traps. As a result, when organizing this method, a system administrator will always have an actual information about a status of the network equipment at any moment of time.

Requirements

To implement a represented solution, the next equipment will be necessary:

  • a gateway NetPing SMS with an installed SIM card to send and receive SMS commands;
  • a configured monitoring system Zabbix

 Zabbix monitoring system can be deployed on a virtual machine or a dedicated physical server, connected to a local network or the Internet network. If Zabbix works on a remote equipment in the Internet network, and a router with the NAT and/or Firewall function is used, then there is a need to allow incoming packages via UDP protocol (port 162) to Zabbix to have a possibility to receive SNMP TRAP from outside.There is a need to address a documentation for a router or ask a network administrator for the additional information. In this article a simplified scheme is examined, when a NetPing SMS device and a server with a Zabbix monitoring system are located in the same local network.

So what have been changed in the latest version?

Firmware Version DKSF 707.3.3 from 25.05.2016:
  • A support of a packaged 7-bit GSM encoding is realized, including popular special characters «{», «}», «[», «]», «|», «\», «~», «^», «@»;

  • In the reference on NetPing MIB at the page «VARIABLES», a possibility of displaying positions with similar names but different OIDs (for different models of NetPing devices) is added. This innovation fixed incorrect displaying of positions «npRelHumSafeRangeLow» and «npRelHumSafeRangeHigh», which appeared in a previous firmware version;

  • A breakdown of an SMS command to words is enhanced, which allowed improving its processing with excessively long average words. In previous firmware versions, it was cut off the way a password disappeared from an SMS command. As a result, an SMS command was responded with the answer: «NP SNMP ERR Wrong password, access denied»;

  • In SMS messages on errors in processing SNMP TRAP (in case of absence of set variables at the page "VARIABLES" of a web interface) braces «{}» are replaced by brackets «()»;
  • Displaying firmware version on the main page and in headings of pages of a device web interface is brought into compliance;
  • Support of long (fragmented) SMS-messages more than 70 characters long is realized;
  • Support of WEBHOOK notifications to the indicated URL address (HTTP API calling) when a device receives an SMS message is realised;
  • A limit for a device to send SMS messages is increased from 60 to 120 messages per hour. When a limit is exceeded, a corresponding notification appears in a log of a device;
  • A built-in reference on NetPing MIB on the page «VARIABLES» of a device web interface is updated;
  • SMS notification from a module «Pinger» is updated. Now an address of a tested host is added into a text of an SMS-notification;
  • A spontaneous reboot of a device when receiving too long SMS message, which caused overfilling of a buffer is eliminated;
  • To make a work of a technical support convenient, the information about firmware and hardware versions is added to headings of all pages of a device web interface;

Today there are a lot of services, which require authorization through a confirmation code to work with them. The code can be received through SMS message only. In the scale of a company, employees of which work remotely, the issue of getting such SMS message can be solved by redirecting the message to e-mails of a group of company employees. To do this, there is a need to register an office e-mail account on a corporate email server or register it at one of the popular free services.

Let us consider a simple case, when a gateway NetPing SMS and equipment with the application Trap Receiver are located in one local network. A scheme works the next way:

  • a gateway of NetPing SMS is an SMS message;
  • on its basis, NetPing SMS forms SNMP Trap, which contains a text of an SMS message and a phone number of a sender;
  • NetPing SMS sends SNMP Trap to a PC/server, where it is received by the application Trap Receiver and forms on its basis a body of a letter for sending

A solution is very simple in implementing and can be easily realized because only one application with a minimal amount of settings is used.

What has been changed in the latest version?

Firmware Version DKSF 48.4.7 from 22.03.2016:
  • The issue of a timely (until rebooting) loss of access to a device via a network while saving network settings of a device by buttons, which do not relate to the section «Network Settings» at the page «Setup» of a device web interface is fixed;

Such way of informing allows system administrators to control an access to the object without using expensive access control systems, which contain different types of electronic locks, components of employee identification via electronic maps, coded key locks and other security elements.

What has been changed in the latest version?

Firmware Version DKSF 70.5.3 DKSF 71.5.3 from 17.02.2016:
  • A notification about resetting the parameters of a device into default settings by the button «Reset» is added;
  • A TCP client and a module for sending e-mail notifications are updated, as a result, a probability of failures of a device when sending long e-mail notifications (reports) is decreased;
  • A possible mismatch of a real relay status and a relay status that is specified in the firmware on certain devices after start/reboot of a device up to the first switching of a relay is eliminated;

  • An issue of confused SNMP TRAP notifications from humidity sensors is resolved. In a previous firmware version the checkboxes «Use common snmpTrapOID for all events» and «Use common snmpTrapOID for all channels» were confused in places;
  • An information about four humidity sensors is added to a periodic e-mail report about a status of sensors, IO lines and relays;
  • English page of humidity sensors is translated according to the Russian one and is now totally workable;
  • A text format of a periodic e-mail report about a status of sensors, IO lines and relays is updated. Displaying of a status of IO lines in the mode «logic output» is fixed;
  • Notifications from 1-Wire smoke sensors are fixed: previously a failure of any 1-Wire smoke sensor has been registered as a failure of a 1-Wire smoke sensor on the first channel;
  • The issue of incorrect forming a periodic e-mail report about a status of sensors, if no sensors are included in a report, is eliminated. Now instead of a block of random symbols, an empty report is sent with the text «- empty report -»;
  • 1-Wire smoke sensors are integrated into the module «Logic». Now using the signals from 1-Wire smoke sensors, it is possible to execute automated tasks, for example, switch on the equipment for sound and light warning when sensors are triggered;
  • The issues at work with a web interface through a TCP tunnel are eliminated, which appeared because of exceeding MTU 1500 bytes while saving the settings at the page /settings.html

NetPing Issued a DKSF 60.5.2 Firmware Update for a UniPing v3 Device

NetPing company announces issuing a firmware update for a device for remote monitoring of server rooms UniPing v3. This firmware version contains the implementation of a new functionality, bug fixes, and update of a layout of certain pages of a device web interface.

What have been changed in the latest version?

DKSF 60.5.2 Firmware Version from 18.01.2016:
  • A TCP client and a module of sending e-mail notifications are updated. As a result, a probability of a device failure is decreased when sending long e-mail notifications;

Integrating NetPing Devices in Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (SCOM)

To control and monitor a corporate IT environment, it is possible to use the product from the Microsoft company named System Center Operations Manager (SCOM), which is included in the integrated management platform System Center. This product allows combining the information about the operability from different components of IT infrastructure, providing its generalized representation in one console. SCOM allows tracking services, devices and operations for many PCs in the network. Operators can rapidly estimate a state of IT environment and its IT services, run different systems and workloads using multiple representations, which show the information about a status, operability, and performance.

One of the tools of Microsoft System Center Operations Manager product is using an SNMP protocol for receiving the information from devices in the network. Accordingly, SCOM allows implementing monitoring of sensors, connected to NetPing devices, and on this basis, it allows building different graphs for a specified period of time. Therefore, SCOM is one more product, using which it is possible to implement a convenient microclimate monitoring, simplest security features indoors for IT and other necessary equipment at the basis of NetPing monitoring devices and control power supply sockets.

Previously, we examined an example of integrating NetPing devices with a cloud service dweet.io. A distinguishing feature of the service is a lack of the need to sign up or configure anything to work with it – data from your devices can be transmitted at once. You can watch changing data from sensors in the view of graphs via the address:

For a better visuality of data, let us use the service freeboard.io, which is a web dashboard and is supported by dweet.io. It allows to visually represent the data from a device using only a web browser and an Internet access. A concept of the service is based on the layout of object-panels (PANE) on the dashboard page. It is possible to add several widgets (WIDGETS) into each panel. There are widgets for a different data representation: a linear scale, a graph, a direction indicator (for example wind), a status indicator ON/OFF, Google Maps location and others. In addition, freeboard.io has got a built-in support for other services (DATASOURCES): FIWARE Orion, PubNub, Yahoo! Weather; and can get data in JSON format via the URL by various methods. It also has a service for representing current time and support for expanding possibilities and features through building own plugins.

NetPing company announces releasing a firmware update for a device of remote controlling power supply sockets NetPing 4/PWR-220 v3/SMS. This firmware version contains new functionality implementation, error fixes and layout update of certain pages of a web interface.

What has been changed in the latest version?

DKSF 54.2.3 Firmware Version from 14.01.2016:

A TCP client and a module for sending e-mail notifications are updated. As a result, failures of a device when sending long e-mail notifications are prevented;

Now HTTP API commands of relay management return the error correctly when attempting to control absent relay with a number 5 in a device. In previous firmware versions, relay management commands with the number 5 always returned the response «relay_result('ok');»;

Firmware Version DKSF 54.2.1 from 11.09.2015:
  • A support for four 1-Wire smoke sensors with a totally integrated notification system and rules for using smoke sensors in the module «Logic» is added;
  • A support for four 1-Wire sensors of 220 V network voltage quality is added to monitor a current voltage value, a network power supply frequency, short-term (from 50Hz half-cycle) failures and overvoltage in a power supply network (beta support);
  • A support of four 1-Wire humidity sensors with separate notifications for a relative humidity and temperature is added;
  • URL-encoded commands (HTTP API) for humidity sensors were changed:

In the code of the USSD request, «*» is replaced by «a», «#» is replaced by «x» (Latin characters). This possibility allows, for example, to execute requesting a balance of the SIM card by HTTP API;
  • A text of SMS notifications from temperature sensors is updated. Now SMS notifications are sent to a destination number as a notification «TEMP.SENSOR j "label" BELOW/IN/ABOVE RANGE (t1 TO t2C), NOW tC»;
  • The operability of an SMS command «NETPING N? <community>» of requesting a status of a pinger is restored at the page «SMS». Now the command returns a current status of a requested device, as well as a DNS name or an IP address of a polled network node;
  • When resetting a device to default settings, a corresponding notification is added to a system log «Parameters of a device are reset to default values (starting while the button Reset is clicked)»;
  • An information notification is added to a system log of a device about resetting e-mail notifications: «sendmail: message has dropped, SMTP server IP unknown». Now such notification appears when an SMTP server address is not set in the settings at the page «E-mail», or a system cannot get an IP address of an SMTP server from a DNS based on its domain name;
  • An NTP server ntp.netping.ru is added into NTP settings at the page «Setup» of a device web interface as a default server for synchronizing the clock;
  • A support of Cyrillic characters in SMS notifications from sensors is added. A length of any SMS notification is limited to 70 Latin and Cyrillic characters both;
  • A support of UTF-8 encoding is added for sending random Cyrillic SMS notifications via an SNMP protocol or an HTTP API (/sendsms.cgi?utf8);
  • An issue of an incorrect forming of a periodic e-mail report about a status of sensors is eliminated if a report does not include any sensor. Now an empty report with the text «- empty report» is sent instead of an incorrectly formed report.

Example of Collecting Information from NetPing Devices in a Form of an Excel Table

On the basis of a developed functionality of sensor monitoring devices and remote controlling of NetPing power supply, it is possible to implement collecting information in different systems of monitoring and accounting. First of all, it is necessary to watch important parameters in the field of interest, as well as building various reports and charts for a specified period of time.

Receiving the information from NetPing devices can be flexible when based on the support of an SNMP protocol and specialized HTTP API commands. Everything necessary to do is to have a NetPing device with connected sensors, certain software or a script and a little time for configuring.

In this article, an example of semi-automated collecting of information from eight temperature sensors of a NetPing device in a form of an Excel table with building illustrative temperature charts and a possibility to view a history of temperatures in different periods of time will be examined.

To collect the information from a NetPing device, a PowerShell script is used, which uses HTTP API commands for receiving data from temperature sensors as the basis. A script is run by Windows Task Scheduler with a specified period of time and stores received values in a text file of a CSV format. An Excel file reads data from a CSV file with the help of a Microsoft Power Query superstructure in the moment when a user clicks a button «Refresh».

NetPing company announces issuing of updated firmware version DKSF 48.4.6 for a Netping 8/PWR-220 v3/SMS device. This firmware version contains fixes, small implementations of new features and certain design updates of a device web interface.

What have been changed in the last version?

Firmware Version DKSF 48.4.6 from 17.08.2015:
  • The operability of built-in relays in the management modes «Watchdog» and «Schedule+Watchdog» is restored by using an SNMP protocol. Setting these modes by an SNMP protocol was unavailable before;
  • The work of USSD requests to view a balance of the SIM card in a device web-interface is restored. In certain previous firmware versions requesting a balance of the SIM card was unavailable;
  • A feature «Disable all notifications» is improved. Previously, the activated setting did not influence the mode «Watchdog», which sent SMS notifications about reloading a built-in relay when it had been triggered;
  • Sending SMS notifications is added when switching a relay management modes «Watchdog», «Schedule». Before, corresponding SMS notifications were sent only when switching relay management modes «Manual Off», «Manual On», «Schedule+Watchdog», and «Logic Output»;
  • An operation mode «Watchdog» is altered. Now «Watchdog» does not check if a status of requested IP addresses or a built-in relay is set to the mode «Manual Off», «Manual On», «Schedule», «Logic Output»;

  • Faulty sending of IR commands by logic rules when firmware starts or the module «Logic» restarts, is fixed;

  • Sending a command «Off» through the module «SNMP Setter» in logic rules is excluded, which took place at the firmware start with the aim to set a remote object into the known status;
  • A command for switching a relay status to an opposite one is implemented. To switch a relay, there is a need write the value «flip(-1)» into the SNMP OID «npRelayFlip»;
  • A probability of incorrect taking readings of temperature sensors in the moment of plugging temperature sensors to a device is decreased;
  • An NTP server address ntp.netping.ru is added when parameters of a device are reset to default values;
  • Formatting of a text of a regular report on a status of sensors and IO lines, which is sent via email, is updated;
  • A name of a memo of power supply inputs of a device is added to corresponding events of a system log file.

Example of NetPing Integration with the Service IoT dweet.io

In the previous publications on an integration of NetPing devices, two examples with cloud services of Internet of things concept (IoT) were examined: xively.com and thethings.io. Now it is a turn for the integration of NetPing devices with a similar service dweet.io to be examined.

A distinctive feature of this service is the fact that there is no need to sign up or configure something to work with it – data from your devices can be transferred at once. The service is built on the principle of objects named "things", into which a data is transferred through HTTP requests. In case if there is no object with such name, it is created automatically. A name for a future object must be unique.

Data can be transferred into objects both by placing them directly to the URL as a pair of a paramater=value, and transferred as JSON structures in the request body POST. At  each request, a service gets a returned response in a form of a JSON response.

To read data from objects, there is HTTP API, which allows receiving last values of parameters or all values for a specified period. A service allows storing up to 500 values for the last 24 hours. A history is cleared if data are not received during 24 hours.

In the free version of the service, all objects and data with their values are in an open access (public). The service provides a possibility to create locked objects and reserve a name for them at an extra charge. Such objects can be accessed using a specific key.

How to Implement «Alarm Buttons» Using NetPing Devices?

NetPing devices for monitoring server rooms have one more remarkable feature – it will allow to organize a notification system on dangerous situations or emergencies at objects. Such systems are sometimes used at businesses for mass notification of staff or persons in charge, who must in turn take actions to evacuate people or eliminate adverse effects.

In this article an example of implementing «alarm buttons», i.e. a notification system, using NetPing devices will be regarded.

Three «alarm buttons» will be used in a notification system at the objects: №1, №2, №3. When clicking any of these buttons a siren alarm will trigger, which is installed at the object №4. In addition, there is one more button «Cancel» at the object №4, when clicking it a siren alarm is switched off.

Example of NetPing Devices Integration with the Service thethings.io

The service thethings.io offers a full range of solutions for the market of Internet of Things (hereinafter IoT) (Internet of things concept), as well as a simple and flexible API for the developers of IoT applications. This service is not related to any certain hardware platform and can be integrated with almost any device if it supports one of the next protocols: HTTP, Websockets, MQTT or CoAP. More detailed information on the issue can be learnt at this page of the project.

One of the interesting peculiarities of using thething.io is a possibility to execute a certain external logic at the service side. There is also a possibility to run own JavaScript code in the cloud thething.io using a special cloud API.

There are three types of executed cloud code: triggers, tasks and functions. Triggers are executed when, for example, an event, received from the sensor, reaches a certain value. The tasks are fulfilled once per hour or once a day. Functions are code fragments, which can be executed by calling REST API. Details can be found on this link.

Example of Integrating NetPing Devices with a Service xively.com

As a majority of projects of the Internet of things concept (Internet of Things, IoT) or cloud services, the service xively.com:

  • Provides a platform (backend) for integration with other devices: a service is not connected to any certain hardware platform, instead it uses a standard HTTP API mechanism – this allows easy integrating of any device;
  • Can serve a platform for developing own applications: in the section for developers there are ready libraries for writing applications, including mobile ones, on different programming languages for different hardware platforms;
  • Offers a possibility for automation – triggers: a service allows interacting between different devices through the mechanism of HTTP POST requests

This article describes an organisation of monitoring sensors on the example of integrating NetPing devices with the service. For the integration, REST API is used, which represents xively.com and URL-encoded commands, which are supported by NetPing devices. The integration is implemented on the basis of PowerShell script.

A script is executed according to the schedule of Windows planner in PowerShell environment. During the first step, the script gathers data from a NetPing temperature and humidity sensor. During the second step, the data are sent to the server of xively.com.

Using NetPing Devices to Solve the Issue of Registering Data from Water Flow Meters

Today the issue of automatic registering water flow data for a certain period of time is often topical. Such registering is necessary not only for plants and industrial manufacturers but also for a network of individual households, summer cottages, garages, apartment buildings. Automatic collection of data from water counters guarantees momentary and precise receiving of readings on water consumption from each metering device. A system excludes errors in manual writing readings of meters and makes a staff of walkers, who control a regularity of giving information from counters, unnecessary.

To organize transferring and registering data on water flow from water meters, there is a need to have a corresponding infrastructure of transferring data and a remote system for analysis and registering readings. It is possible to use a NetPing device with input-output lines, which allows to plug in water consumption meters with a pulse output and Ethernet ports for connecting to a local network with the aim to transfer data into the analyzing and metering system as a main element of the data transfer infrastructure.

This article will represent a creation of a system for metering a remote water consumption, built on the basis of the device NetPing IO v2 (it is also possible to use a device UniPing v3 for this task), a water meter with a pulse output and Zabbix monitoring system. This system of a remote metering of water consumption allows to take readings from a pulse output of a meter remotely, which can later be sent to the PC or a server to gather data, statistics, analytics and forming invoices for payment.

Configuring E-mail Notifications in the Monitoring System The Dude

The monitoring system The Dude has a built-in system of e-mail notifications, but it can work only with SMTP servers without authorization. We will use the service Gmail to send e-mail notifications, where SMTP authorization is required. To do this, we will use a free SMTP client – mailsend).

Let us examine the example of a configuration for Windows OS.

Netping company reports about issuing firmware updates for devices NetPing 2/PWR-220 v3/ETH NetPing 2/PWR-220 v1/SMS NetPing 2/PWR-220 v2/SMS. New firmware versions for devices allowed to make working with devices more stable and functional.

What has been changed in the latest versions?

Firmware Version DKSF 52.9.2 DKSF 201.9.2 DKSF 202.9.2 from 01.09.2015:
  • Limits are introduced for a maximum length of characters in login and password as well as in memos for IO lines, sensors and relays;
  • A reliability of temperature sensors operation that did not work at certain devices while updating firmware to the version DKSF 52/201/202.8.X is improved;
  • URL-encoded commands (HTTP API) for IO lines have been changed:
    1. Controlling an operation mode of an IO line (a number of a line is indicated before &):/io.cgi?ion&mode=0/io.cgi?ion&mode=1/io.cgi?ion&mode=2where: n - is a number of an IO line, 0 - is an input; 1 - is a manually controlled output; 2 - is a logic output
    2. Setting a logic level to the specified value at an output (when working in the mode «1»):/io.cgi?ion=0/io.cgi?ion=1where: n - is a number of an IO line
    3. A response to an HTTP API command «/io.cgi?io4=n», where n>1 is fixed. Now a command always returns a response «io_result('error')» within these conditions;
  • A command for switching a status of an IO line to the opposite one is implemented. For an IO line, there is a need to write the value «flip(-1)» into SNMP OID «npIoLevelOut»;
  • A notification of all types (Log, Syslog, SNMP TRAP, e-mail and SMS) from a humidity sensor for the event «Sensor failed» is restored. In a previous firmware version, this notification did not work when this event took place;
  • Support of Cyrillic letters in SMS notifications from sensors, IO lines, and relays is added. A length of any SMS notification is limited to 70 characters;
  • An operability of the SMS command «NETPING N? <community>» for requesting a pinger status at the page «SMS» is restored. Now the command returns an actual status;
  • A response to an SMS command «NETPING Pn? <community>» for requesting a relay status, where n - is a relay number is updated. Now the information on a current relay status: + (On), - (Off) is added to the response besides an operation mode of a relay;
  • An operability of the SMS command «NETPING Kn <community>» is restored, where n - is a number of a written command, which allows to send a command from the phone through an IR extension module IRC-TRv2 for a remote management of devices with an infrared (IR) interface. In previous firmware versions, the command has always returned an error «NP WRONG CMD: "NETPING Kn <community>"»;
  • An operability of the SMS command «NETPING Tn? <community>» for requesting readings of a temperature sensor is restored, where n - is a number of a temperature sensor. In previous firmware versions, a command has always returned the error «NP WRONG CMD: "NETPING Tn <community>"»;
  • Duplicating of a periodic report about a status of sensors, IO lines, and relays is eliminated. In a previous firmware version, a periodic report has been sent twice;
  • An HTTP API command for a USSD request: «/ussdstart.cgi?requestcode» is added, where requestcode – is for example a100x, which means *100#. In the code of a USSD request, «*» is replaced by «a», «#» is replaced by «x» (Latin characters). This possibility allows, for example, to request SIM card balance through HTTP API;
  • Sending random SMS notifications to the specified phone number or a group of phone numbers using third party web applications through HTTP API is implemented;
  • A branch «npBatteryTraps» for a battery (for a device NetPing 2/PWR-220 v2/SMS with an embedded GSM modem) is added into the contents of the MIB file;
  • Support of a new WS-2 humidity sensor (for a device NetPing 2/PWR-220 v3/ETH) is implemented;
  • An authorization issue at a web interface while entering a long username is eliminated;
  • A probability of errors caused by adding special characters into text data, such as comments to IO lines, sensors, relays, a location of a device and contact data is decreased. It is prohibited to use «"» and «:» in text fields;

An Example of Integrating NetPing Devices into the Observium Monitoring System

Observium is a monitoring and surveillance system for network devices and servers (NMS) just as Zabbix, Nagios, PRTG Network Monitor and others. At the same time, the list of supported devices is huge and is not limited to network devices only. An important requirement is that a device must support an operation of an SNMP protocol.

A main aim of the Observium project is to create a monitoring system with the simplest management and surveillance of devices, the same it remains today. The system is distributed in two ways: Community Edition (CE is free) and Subscription (and a paid subscription). The last one has agents for active notifications on events. Details can be found at the official website of the project: http://www.observium.org/.

Let us consider the example of integrating Observium CE with the device UniPing server solution v3/SMS.

A solution represented in the article allows surveying parameters received from temperature and humidity sensors, connected to the device UniPing server solution v3/SMS. The system draws diagrams of a device availability, changes in temperature and humidity, and displays top and bottom margins of the safe range on them that are specified in corresponding parameters of the device. When crossing over margins of a safe range, reloading or unavailability of a connected device UniPing server solution v3/SMS, the system registers corresponding records in the log file.

A simplicity of deployment is an advantage of this solution. Any changes in a configuration of the sensors of the device UniPing server solution v3/SMS, as well as adding or deleting sensors, does not need any intervention in the configuration of Observium CE because all changes are made automatically.

NetPing Issued an Update for DKSF 70.5.2 Firmware for the Device UniPing Server Solution v3/SMS

Netping company announces issuing a new firmware update for a device for remote monitoring of server rooms UniPing server solution v3/SMS. This firmware version contains fixes of errors, introducing new functionality and updated layout of certain pages of a device web interface.

What has been changed in the latest versions?

DKSF 70.5.2 Firmware Version from 17.07.2015:
  • Supporting up to four 1-Wire sensors is added to control a supply 220V voltage quality for monitoring an actual voltage value, power supply frequency and short term failures (from half-cycle 50Hz) as well as overvoltage in the power supply (beta support);
  • Supporting up to four 1-Wire smoke sensors is added to monitor fire hazards in several rooms simultaneously;
  • Supporting up to four 1-Wire humidity sensors with separate notifications for a relative humidity and temperature is added;
  • SNMP TRAP v2 notifications are added that allow to generate individual snmpTrapOID on each event as well as a channel for humidity sensors and for 220 V power supply voltage quality sensors;

  • Supporting encoding UTF-8 is added to send random SMS notifications via SNMP protocol or HTTP API (/sendsms.cgi?utf8). This innovation is necessary to send random Cyrillic SMS notifications;
  • A device rebooting algorithm is redesigned. A possibility of a device to freeze when updating a firmware version is decreased (possible freezing when updating is safe for functioning of NetPing devices);
  • SMS notification from the module «Pinger» is updated. Now an address of the checked host is added into the text of an SMS notification;
  • A response to an SMS command for requesting the status of an IO line is updated: NETPING Ln? <community>, where n is a number of an IO line. Now a response conatins the information on the operation mode of an IO line: input (IN), output (OUT), logic output (OUT.L);
  • The next command HTTP API of the USSD request is added: /ussdstart.cgi?requestcode, where requestcode is a100x for instance, which means *100#. In the code of the USSD, a request «*» is replaced by «a», «#» is replaced by «x» (Latin symbols). This possibility allows to request a balance of the SIM card by HTTP API;
  • Supporting Cyrillic letters in SMS notifications from sensors, IO lines and a built-in relay is added. A length of any SMS notification is limited to 70 characters;
  • A module for sending e-mail notifications is improved. Now it supports the following:
    • working with SMTP servers without authorisation and without setting a username and a password in the settings of the module at the page «E-MAIL» of a device web interface;

Example of Sending Email Notifications from Netping Using Local SMTP Server in OS Windows

 

NetPing devices for monitoring server rooms and remote controlling a power supply have got a possibility to send e-mail notifications about triggering sensors and relays, as well as send periodical reports about status of sensors according to previously configured schedule at the page of a web interface. However, the firmware of the module for sending e-mail notifications and reports of several devices is implemented to support the work with mail servers only, which support SMTP protocol, and an authentication method AUTH PLAIN. In addition, a module for sending e-mail notifications and reports cannot support SSL, TLS or other encoding types.

To avoid problems with sending e-mail notifications from devices NetPing through SMTP servers that work without authorization, or support an authentication method AUTH LOGIN and TLS encoding, it is possible to use a local SMTP relay from Microsoft. It is installed in server rooms under Windows OS in several minutes and requires a minimal configuration to start sending e-mail notifications.

As a result of using SMTP relay in server rooms under Windows OS, we have a working functionality for sending e-mail notifications from NetPing devices regardless features of the module sendmail, implemented in firmware of devices.

Zabbix is a free monitoring system for tracking statuses of various services of a computer network, servers and network equipment. This system has got a possibility to adjust different ways to notify a user: e-mail, SMS, Jabber, Ez Texting, user scripts. These ways to notify a user are delivery channels in use to send notifications and alerts from Zabbix. According to the fact that Zabbix supports user scripts, it is possible to use devices  NetPing SMS, UniPing server solution v3/SMS, or NetPing 8/PWR-220 v3/SMS as an SMS gateway to send SMS notifications about events in the monitoring system Zabbix as one of the notification methods. Firmware Version DKSF 48.4.5 from 17.07.2015:
  • Freezing of an algorithm of transferring a group of sockets to the alternate input while a module «Watchdog» is working with a minimal polling period is eliminated. External Logic for Netping Devices Based on PowerShell

The most typical issue of monitoring server rooms is controlling climate and environment while a computer equipment works. Tracking temperature parameters and making a decision on results may be automated.

Let us consider an example of automation for controlling a climate in a server room based on Microsoft PowerShell script.

This solution for monitoring is based on the device UniPing server solution v3/SMS and allows to turn on/off an air conditioner or a fan depending on a temperature in a server room and outside. A management logic is based on the script of Microsoft PowerShell, which is executed in Windows environment on one of existing servers or on any external PC, connected to the Internet.

The script is executed according to a schedule with a frequency specified in a Windows Scheduler: it polls temperature sensors and send commands to turn on/off cooling/air conditioning appliances via an SNMP protocol. The next conditions are checked:

  • if a temperature outside a server room is +20 °C or below, and more than +27 °C inside a server room, a fan will be turned on by the socket NetPing AC/DIN, and an air conditioner will be turned off by the IR transmitter IRC-TR v2;
  • if a temperature outside a server room exceeds +20 °C, and +27 °C inside a server room, then an air conditioner will be turned on by the IR transmitter IRC-TR v2, and a fan will be turned off by the socket NetPing AC/DIN;
  • if a temperature inside a server room is +27 °C or below, all appliances will be turned off

Firstly, this article will do a small excursion into a theory of cooling server rooms. Secondly, I will try to discuss main errors when planning a cooling system. Thirdly, I will examine what stuff is really worth spending some money and what things can be easily refused.

Today there are two global strategies in data centres cooling:

Advantages of the first strategy are obvious. They are: low cost of implementing, low cost of technical support, ridiculous bills for electricity. Its disadvantages are also clear. Uncontrolled air humidity and dust level will inevitably bring to failure of servers components. Such approach has its own followers. Usually it is big technological companies. Why is it good for them and bad for the others? There are 3 reasons for this:

The second strategy implies a higher reliability and a longer life time of cooled equipment. The most traditional example is banking. As well as all other companies that do not change their servers like socks. Disadvantages of this strategy are all about its price (building, maintenance, electricity bills).

It is clear that the most companies consider a method “the most efficiently and unpretentiously”. However, the simplest way is not always the right one. Sometimes being too simple is an opposite to being right.

Let us switch over to more practical stuff. When we discuss cooling servers, controlling a temperature is considered the first thing to do. It is right but not sufficient. There are three basics of right cooling. They are: a temperature, an air volume and its humidity. The second important element is a management of air flow, i.e. how to direct a cold air to the place where a server will take it in and how to take out a hot air from a server release and direct it to an air conditioner as well as how to keep these airflows, cold and hot, separate one from another to prevent their mixing up.

How Do You Maintain a Microclimate in a Server Room?

My name is Marat, as for now I'm an IT specialist in a wide range of areas, almost any-key. In my review I would like to pay a reader's attention to systems of microclimate maintaining and monitoring in a server room.

My review does not regard giant data centres full of servers, it is more about examples with one or two servers. In this review I would like to compare modern climate control systems in server rooms for small organisations. I did not try to analyse all possible monitoring systems and compared only low-cost solutions of approximately the same price.

After having got an experience of work in various organisations with different stuff as well as a different budget level, it became clear and obvious to me that the last thing for which an administration is ready to pay is a climate control system in a server room. A server room historically happened to be the most uncomfortable room that can be imagined. However, this fact is not that bad, if your server room is situated somewhere in a faraway basement, where it is cold the most part of a year even with no air conditioner. But what to do when a server room is decided to be in an attic? In this case an air conditioner is a strict must-have.

During many years of my work I happened to see extremely different server rooms: server rooms in a kitchen, when they had to argue with security officers to leave windows opened and never turn on heaters in the kitchen; server rooms in an office where a temperature of a server operation was directly influenced by a person who had an air conditioner remote control. I also had an experience of work with a server room where an air conditioner worked 24 hours 7 days a week and they had no climate monitoring at all. I.e. in case if a conditioner fails on a weekend, equipment can get overheated. Actually, it did happen four years after beginning of its operation: once a liquid begin to flow from a split-system and we had to change it. As for now I think about equipping a server room with climate control systems. Ideally I plan to install temperature, humidity, 220 V occurrence and smoke sensors as well as an IP-camera to have an actual picture of a room. I plan to connect devices to a router from a provider using Ethernet + I need a GSM gateway to send messages about critical statuses of a system. I am going to purchase an IP camera separately; most probably it will be inexpensive Hikvision in a standard body. I will plug it to a provider’s router.

An Example of Monitoring on the Basis of NetPing in a Typical Server Room

Introduction

In this article I would like to describe my experience as well as my attitude to monitoring a server room. To start with, let us estimate a scale of a responsibility area. I have a small server room (two square meters), where there are only 2 racks: one for servers and another one for network equipment. A climate is maintained by a split system with two air conditioners (a main and a backup one) and we have a UPS there. In general, it is a typical server room of a small company. One day I received a letter notifying me that my servers have got the End-Of-Support status (5 years have passed from the moment of purchase), and a management decided not to pay for extending a warranty, but buy new firmware instead. The old firmware had to go to playgrounds for developers and testers. At the same time a management warned that «the going gets tough» and there will be no money for further development unless absolutely necessary. Being concerned about durability and reliability of my servers, I brought up the issue of monitoring, not only for the equipment, but for the server room as well.

NetPing Integration with Crestron Controller

Crestron is a system of management and automation for homes, offices, schools, hospitals, hotels and other objects.With the help of a module of management of NetPing devices, Crestron can manage a NetPing 2/PWR-220 v3/ETH device (for the moment, only this model is supported).NetPing 2/PWR-220 v3/ETH device in the Crestron system can be used to manage lights (without dimmering), ventilation and performing other tasks that can be solved by turning on\turning off a relay. Cheap and reliable NetPing device can be used instead of a more expensive Crestron DIN8-SW8 device. With the help of this module, Crestron controller gets a possibility to manage a relay of NetPing device by http protocol.In addition, the module allows to get Syslog notifications from a NetPing device. Thanks to this function, a Crestron controller always knows a current status of a relay, even if it was changed through a web interface of a NetPing device or by an SNMP protocol. This module is designed for managing NetPing devices with two built-in relays, but it can be easily improved to manage devices with more relays.To use this module in projects, there is a need to have a source file of the module in SIMPL+  (*.usp) format. It must be compiled in the SIMP Windows environment for a necessary series of controllers (2 or 3).

Comparison of Monitoring Systems Zabbix and PRTG network monitor

Any administrator, who is in charge of maintenance of a network and information systems, always faces an issue of monitoring the entire infrastructure. Earlier such issues were solved by writing bat or shell scripts, which work according to a schedule and send diagnostic results via an email.  Such approach has a number of obvious disadvantages:

Difficulties in solving an issue of monitoring have led to creating separate monitoring systems both vendor ones (for example, Oracle Enterprise Manager), and open source ones (Zabbix) as well as commercial solutions (PRTG, Nagios). In this article we will examine Zabbix 2.2 and PRTG Network Monitor 14.3 from the point of view of features of each system and its installing, adjusting and using difficulties.

A Brief Products Overview:

Zabbix is an open source enterprise solution (according to an information at the official web site), which can fulfill a complex monitoring of an infrastructure (servers, network devices and virtual machines), represent received information in a form of diagrams, watch a device load and performance using own agents (which are supported by almost all operating systems). PRTG solution is oriented on a network monitoring (network devices, interfaces, data transfer channels), which is clearly descried at its web site. The solution doesn't need installing agents on monitoring objects and uses standard protocols and technologies ICMP, SNMP, Packet Sniffing, NetFlow, etc. A concept of "sensor" is often used in PRTG. In this case, a network service, which is on different levels of OSI model, is a sensor (a port of equipment can be monitored as well as an operation of HTTP, POP/SMTP). Both monitoring systems have a possibility to send notifications about incidents via an email or an SMS, and can work both through http and https (an extremely important feature, if a monitoring system has an Internet access. It is necessary to indicate that PRTG is developed for network monitoring as well as everything connected to it (as said at a developer's web site), while Zabbix is oriented on an entire infrastructure.  To make an experiment clear, I will use both solutions for the same issue: network and servers monitoring.
